How to Help

Waihi Harbour WMR Eastern Section.

Become a Volunteer!

We carry out a range of tasks in our wetland conservation work, and we are totally reliant on the help of our amazing, dedicated volunteers and members. We run regular working bees and work days to complete important ecological restoration jobs around Maketu. We reward your hard work with sausage sizzles or coffee and muffin breaks to show our appreciation! Not to mention good company, beautiful scenery and interesting wildlife!

Projects include planting native species, removing non native plants and collecting litter. In order to allow people to assist with more specialist tasks we sometimes run training courses in areas such as chainsaw use, herbicide application, ATV/LUV driving and pest animal control. These courses are usually around two thirds funded so we are able to keep the cost to you extremely low.

We have a great deal of tasks that don’t require any training or expertise, as well as more specialist conservation and wetland jobs, so we welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities. If you have a particular skill or area of knowledge then we’d love to hear from you. Those with experience of teaching or working with children might be keen to get involved with our education program. Or we also carry out work such as fencing, herbicide spraying, clearing large areas of scrub using diggers, and chainsaw work, so feel free to contact us if you would like to become a MOWS volunteer.

You can also support us by becoming a member or making a donation. Please click on the link below to download our membership form. Having a regular income from memberships means that we can plan ahead, and are less reliant on outside funding. Money received from membership and donations goes directly to our ecological restoration projects, and is used for things such as buying native plants, buying equipment, and running our ATV. If you donate $500 or over you can specify how you would like the money to be spent. Membership subscription is annual, and the costs are:

Individual – $20

Joint – $30

Or you can join for life for:

Individual life $250

Joint life $350

Corporate $250 (By supporting us through your business you will be recognised as one of our sponsors, and can have your logo displayed along with our other supporters at our events).
